The World Mosquito Program is working in Nadi to protect communities from mosquito-borne diseases like dengue, Zika, chikungunya and yellow fever.
Following the success of our Central Division Project, we expanded to the Western Division in 2019, involving communities in and around Nadi. Thanks to strong community support, we and our partner, the Ministry of Health and Medical Services, completed the release phase of the project in September 2019.
We are now continuing our partnership to rigorously evaluate both the levels of Wolbachia in the mosquito population and the impact of Wolbachia on the transmission of dengue and other mosquito-borne diseases.
The Nadi community has welcomed the Wolbachia method. Prior to releases, we spoke to communities about our work and established a community reference group, which independently endorsed the commencement of the release phase.
In Nadi, public acceptance of the project (prior to the release of mosquitoes) was rated 97%.
We released Wolbachia-carrying mosquitoes across the project areas later in 2019 and we are now collecting data on the incidence of dengue and chikungunya in the proposed release areas. Our partners at the Ministry of Health and Medical Services will continue to keep the community informed about the progress of our periodic monitoring.
