The Applying Wolbachia to Eliminate Dengue (AWED) cluster randomised trial was conducted in Yogyakarta, Indonesia in 2017-2020. It was designed to test whether the deployment of Wolbachia (wMel) -infected Aedes aegypti would reduce the incidence of virologically-confirmed dengue amongst 3-to-45 year olds. We found that wMel was successfully introgressed into intervention clusters, and led to a 77% reduction in dengue incidence and a 86% reduction in dengue hospitalisations, compared to untreated clusters. Protective efficacy was similar against all four dengue virus serotypes.
